It is a city in the north of Egypt, located in the westernmost area of the Nile Delta, it is the main port of Egypt and one of the most important in the Mediterranean. Currently it is also the most western and cosmopolitan city in the country. It is the second largest city in Egypt after Cairo. Founded by Alexander the Great in the year 331 BC. In a strategic port region, it became in a few years the cultural center of the ancient world. Historically, the city is known for its lighthouse. The Alexandria Lighthouse was built in the 3rd century BC. and destroyed by two earthquakes during the 14th century, and for almost two millennia it was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. With a height of about 130 meters, it was located on the island of Pharos, the name from which the Spanish word lighthouse derives. Another of the main points of interest in Alexandria was its library, in which almost a million documents were kept since the 3rd century BC, which disappeared with their mysterious destruction. Since 2003 there is a new library that is worth visiting. Other places of interest in the city are the Quaitbay Fortress, built in 1480 by the sultan of the same name, and some Greek and Roman ruins scattered around the city.
