Ethnic Senegal itinerary

Day 1:

DAKAR

Flight from your hometown to Blaise Diagne International Airport - Dakar. *

Arrival at Dakar International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Accommodation.

Day 2:

DAKAR - GOREE ISLAND - PINK LAKE

Breakfast and departure for a panoramic tour of the city of Dakar, stopping in the center with its colonial buildings and colorful markets, the new Museum of Black Civilizations and the African Renaissance Monument, the tallest on the African continent at which is reached by climbing almost 200 stairs. Next, transfer to the pier and departure on the ferry that will take us to Goree Island. Arrival and walking tour of this mythical place declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Visit the House of Slaves, the island's emblematic museum, before walking through the narrow streets admiring the different colored houses with balconies and bougainvillea. Free time for lunch (not included) and return to Dakar. Continuation to Pink Lake (*) where we arrived in time to see up close the traditional salt extraction process by the riverside residents. Dinner and accommodation.

(*) Currently, due to extreme floods that have been turning the famous waters of the lake green, the intense pink color so characteristic has changed and it will take time for the lake recovers its original color.

Day 3:

PINK LAKE - KAOLACK - WASSADOU/TAMBACOUNDA

Breakfast and departure to the interior of the country. A first stop will be made in Kaolack, a transit city for all travelers to Gambia, Casamance or Guinea. In its immense market you can find any type of merchandise, from foodstuffs to fabrics, from traditional agricultural materials to amulets made on site. On the way to Wassadou or Tambacounda (depending on availability and/or weather conditions), visit to villages of different ethnicities that populate this part of the country. Free time for lunch (not included). Dinner and accommodation (*).

(*) Accommodation for tonight is planned in Wassadou but may be changed without prior notice if the conditions of the camp are not appropriate to spend the night.

Day 4:

WASSADOU/TAMBACOUNDA - GOLD HUNTERS – DINDEFELO - KEDOUGOU

Breakfast. On the way to Kedougou, we will pass through Bantako or Tinkoto. There you will be able to appreciate the traditional way of searching for gold that is still used in this part of the country. Free time for lunch (not included) and continuation to the Peul village of Dindefelo. Arrival and registration at the camp from where we will walk along a narrow track covered with vines that will take us to the only waterfall in Senegal. Visit with the possibility of taking a bath in its fresh waters. If time permits, we can visit the Jane Goodall Institute present in the area and dedicated to the protection of the last chimpanzees in West Africa. Return to camp and transfer to Kedougou. Dinner and accommodation.

Day 5:

KEDOUGOU - BASSARI VILLAGE - KEDOUGOU

Breakfast. In order to escape the various invasions of their neighbors from other tribes, the Bassari took refuge in the mountainous areas of the Fouta Djalon. Hidden in these hard-to-reach places, they have tried throughout history to protect their way of life, which is totally different from the rest of Africa in several aspects. Depending on availability, we will meet Balingo, the living memory of this town who will explain the customs and traditions to us. After lunch in the village, return to Kedougou with a stop in Salemata where perhaps we can see the manufacturing process of Shea butter, made by local women. Dinner and accommodation.

Day 6:

KEDOUGOU - BEDIK VILLAGE OF IWOL - TAMBACOUNDA

Breakfast. We continue to discover the treasures of Kedougou, located in the middle of the hills and bathed by the Gambia River. It is the most mountainous area of the country and the capital par excellence of ethnic minorities. Today you will meet one of them: the Bedik. Like their cousins the Bassari, they fled the Islamization carried out by the Peul to settle in the mountains. From the Peul de Ibel village, we will undertake a short trek in the Fouta Djalon mountains, where they live hidden, which has allowed them to safeguard many of their traditions. Visit of the town and the fields where peanuts and millet are grown with rudimentary methods, with which they prepare their famous beer. After the visit, return to your hotel in Kedougou. In the afternoon, walk through the city and departure to Tambacounda. Arrival at the hotel, dinner and accommodation.

Day 7:

TAMBACOUNDA - NIANING (LITTLE COAST)

Breakfast. Early departure heading north. We move away from the landscapes of the most genuine Senegal, missing the simplicity and joy of its people. Finally we sight the so-called “Petite Cote” where we will seek refuge in one of the least visited towns, dinner and overnight in a small hotel facing the beach. Dinner and accommodation.

Day 8:

NIANING (SMALL COAST) - DAKAR

Breakfast and departure to the Bandia animal reserve. Arrival and safari by car through the acacia and baobab vegetation, in search of antelopes, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, wild boars and a wide variety of monkeys. Free time in the reservation for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, transfer to Dakar airport. End of our services.
