It is a city with a picturesque landscape and moderate climate. It is considered the most important tea producing area in Sri Lanka. The city is dominated by Mount Pidurutalagala, the highest in the country at 2,534 meters above sea level. It is also known as the “City of Light” or “Little England” for its European-style houses. Its streets give off a marked European style, the result of British colonization and the fact that it was founded by the Englishman Siri Samuel Baker.
