The city is considered a world-class tourist destination, certified by the World Tourism Organization. In just a few years, it underwent a remarkable transformation, going from being a fishing island surrounded by virgin jungle and unknown beaches to being, today, the most recognized Mexican tourist center in the world. Cancun is divided into several areas: Isla Cancun is the most important hotel zone, where most of the beaches and tourist activities are concentrated; the urban area where the bulk of the population lives; Puerto Juarez, where there are 2 main docks for boarding and crossing to Isla Mujeres, located just 7 kilometers from the port; Franja Ejidal is an area of settlements distributed irregularly in the northern part of the city; and Alfredo V. Bonfil.
