Capital and most populated city of the state of South Australia, and the fifth most populated in Australia, with a population of 1.3 million inhabitants. It is a coastal city located in the southern part of the Indian Ocean, in the Adelaide Heights, north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, between the Gulf of St. Vincent and the Lofty Ranges. It has a fairly linear plan.Founded in 1836. Colonel William Light, one of the "fathers" of its formation, designed the city and chose its strategic location, near the Torrens River. Light designed Adelaide with large spaces, extensive squares and parks, beautiful buildings, etc. Soon, Adelaide became the "city of liberties", established as the colony's center for an immigrant freedom project, promising civil liberties, religious freedom and political progressivism.Today Today, Adelaide is known as Australia's city of culture, with many festivals, theatres, as well as its wine, arts and sports.It is the commercial and government center of South Australia. Most of them are concentrated in the center of the city, along North Terrace Boulevard, King William Street and in other districts of the metropolitan area.
