City considered the religious capital of the country, it is perhaps one of the symbols of Morocco. The Medina of Fez el Bali (old Fez) is one of the largest medieval sites in the world, and the gates and walls that surround it protect its interior, made up of labyrinthinely organized alleyways. Unlike many fortified towns of its time, Fez has not changed its original boundaries. Its inhabitants have expanded to the southwest and the slopes, forming an arc that runs from north to south of the new area. The old part is made up of 9,400 streets and alleys.
