It is a saline lake of endorheic origin. It is the largest area outside the Sahara with an area of 7,000 square kilometers. It has a width of 20 kilometers at its narrowest part and reaches up to 250 kilometers from end to end. Due to the extreme weather in the region, with an annual rainfall of 100 mm and maximum temperatures of 50oC, the water that reaches the lake evaporates quickly. During the summer it remains completely dry. In that period you can see the Fata Morgana, a characteristic optical effect of large, completely flat areas. The shade of the surface varies over time between white, light green and purple. On the shores of the lake you can find piles of salt prepared for industrial processing. Chott el Djerid has been the setting for several films, including: Star Wars Episode IV.
